What an OET Medicine mock test covers

The OET has four sub-tests. Two are the same paper for every candidate and two are written for your profession. A mock test for doctors is therefore the shared papers plus Medicine tasks on top, and the “Medicine” part only changes what you write and say, not what you listen to or read.

Listening — shared

Consultations where you complete notes as you listen, short workplace extracts, and longer talks on healthcare topics. In the free mock, marked automatically.

Reading — shared

Quick fact-finding across short texts, then workplace notices and long healthcare articles with multiple-choice questions. In the free mock, marked automatically.

Writing — Medicine

A letter written from case notes, most often a referral to a specialist. Practised separately, with AI feedback against the OET criteria.

Speaking — Medicine

Role-plays in which you are the doctor and the other speaker is a patient or relative. Practised separately with an AI patient and a scored assessment.

What you get from the free mock test

  • A full Listening and Reading test with audio, taken on screen as in OET on Computer.
  • Each section marked as soon as you submit it, with the correct answers shown.
  • An estimated grade for Listening and another for Reading, so you can see which one is holding you back.
  • No account needed to start, and no credit card at any point.

When you want more than one attempt, Premium opens all 25 OET practice tests along with AI Writing feedback and AI Speaking role-plays.

The score a doctor is aiming for

Your mock result only means something next to the score your regulator asks for. These are the minimums for the bodies doctors most often apply to, on OET’s 0–500 scale (350 is the bottom of grade B, 300 the bottom of C+).

How to sit a mock test so the result is worth having

  • Sit it in one go, with headphones, on a day off call and away from your phone.
  • Play each recording once. The exam does not let you go back, and replaying is the quickest way to inflate a practice score.
  • In Listening Part A, write what you hear and check spelling afterwards. A misspelt drug or condition costs the mark even if you understood it.
  • In Reading Part A, leave a question that stalls you and come back. That part rewards speed more than careful reading.
  • Afterwards, sort every mistake by cause: did not hear it, did not know the word, misread the question, or ran out of time. Each cause has a different fix.
  • Leave a few days of targeted work before the next mock. Two tests back to back mostly measure the same weakness twice.

The Medicine half: Writing and Speaking

Listening and Reading can be marked against an answer key. Writing and Speaking cannot, which is why doctors who study alone tend to leave them last. Writing is the quickest sub-test to improve with a clear method.

In a referral letter, case notes from several consultations often repeat the same symptoms. Do not retell each visit in order. Group the history by theme, state how the problem has changed over time in a sentence or two, and spend your words on what the specialist needs in order to act. Read a Medicine sample letter next to its case notes and work out why some notes were left out, then write one of your own against the 45-minute limit.

For Speaking, read a doctor role-play card and say your opening lines aloud rather than in your head. Spelling of drugs and conditions affects both Listening Part A and your letter, so a few minutes a day on the free dictation practice is time well spent between mocks.

OET Mock Test for Doctors: FAQ

Is there a free OET Medicine sample test?

Yes. Test 1 is a complete Listening and Reading mock test you can sit online for free, with no credit card and nothing to download. Your answers are marked as soon as you submit each section. Premium opens the other 24 tests and adds AI feedback on Writing and Speaking.

Is the Listening and Reading paper different for doctors?

No. OET Listening and Reading are the same papers for all twelve professions, so a doctor answers exactly the same questions as a nurse or pharmacist in those two sub-tests. Only Writing and Speaking are written for your profession. That is why "OET Medicine" practice means the shared Listening and Reading papers plus Medicine letter-writing and role-play tasks.

What do doctors write in OET Writing?

You write one letter from a set of case notes, and for doctors it is most often a referral letter to a specialist or another doctor. The skill being marked is selection: deciding which facts the reader needs and leaving out the rest. Read a worked example beside its case notes before you write one under the 45-minute limit.

What OET score do doctors need?

It depends on the regulator. The GMC asks for grade B (350) in all four sub-tests from a single sitting. Ahpra, MCNZ and ECFMG each set their own minimums, and some of them let you combine two sittings. The table on this page and the OET score calculator show the current figures for each.

Is this an official OET mock test?

No. OET Practice is an independent preparation site and is not affiliated with OET or CBLA. Our tests follow the official format but the material is written from scratch. The official sample tests are published on the OET website and are worth sitting as well.

How many mock tests should a doctor take before the exam?

There is no fixed number. One full mock a week for the last four to six weeks is a realistic target around clinical work. What matters more than the count is sorting your mistakes by cause before you sit the next one.
