How to Practice OET Speaking Without a Study Partner

August 2, 2026 · 7 min read

Speaking is the one OET sub-test you genuinely cannot prepare for with a book. It requires two people: a candidate, and someone playing the patient or relative convincingly enough to react to what you actually say. Most candidates don't have a colleague free for forty minutes a day, and paid tutors add up fast. Here is what actually works when you're preparing solo.

Why Speaking Is Different From the Other Sub-Tests

Listening, Reading, and even Writing can be practised entirely alone against an answer key. Speaking cannot, because half of what's being assessed — information gathering, structure, incorporating the patient's perspective — only shows up when someone unpredictable is on the other side of the conversation, asking follow-up questions you didn't expect and revealing information only when you ask the right thing.

Talking to yourself in the mirror tells you how you sound. It tells you nothing about whether your questions actually surface the information a real patient is hiding, or whether your explanation would satisfy someone who doesn't already know the answer.

Method 1: Record Yourself Against a Role-Play Card

Take any OET Speaking sample card, set a five-minute timer, and record yourself running the full consultation solo — playing both parts if needed. This is far more useful than reading the card silently because it forces you to produce spoken, spontaneous English under time pressure, exactly like the real test.

Afterwards, listen back specifically for: filler words and hesitation, whether your questions were open or closed, and whether you actually addressed every task on the card. Most candidates are shocked at how different their spoken performance sounds compared to how it felt while speaking.

Method 2: Shadow Native-Level Consultations

Find real (or realistic) doctor-patient or nurse-patient dialogue — from OET preparation materials, medical communication training videos, or health podcasts — and shadow it: play a line, pause, repeat it aloud matching pace and intonation. This builds the natural rhythm and phrasing of clinical English faster than reading scripts silently, and it directly improves the Fluency and Intelligibility criteria.

Method 3: Trade Sessions With Another Candidate

If you know even one other OET candidate, agree to a fixed weekly swap: you play the patient for their role play, they play the patient for yours. You don't need a native speaker or a tutor — you need someone who will actually read the hidden information on a role-play card and reveal it only when asked, which is what makes the practice realistic. Online OET study groups and forums are the easiest way to find a swap partner if you don't already know one.

Method 4: Practice With an AI Patient, On Demand

The limitation every solo method shares is that nothing reacts to you in real time the way a real conversation does. Our AI Speaking Practice tool was built specifically to close that gap: you have a live voice conversation with an AI playing the patient, relative, or carer from a curated OET-style role-play card (Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy scenarios so far), and it responds the way a real person would — revealing information gradually, misunderstanding overly technical language, expressing genuine concern, and letting you lead the consultation, not the other way around.

After the five-minute role play ends, you get an AI practice assessment scored against the same categories used in the real exam — Linguistic criteria (Intelligibility, Fluency, Appropriateness, Grammar & Expression) and Clinical Communication criteria (Relationship Building, Patient Perspective, Providing Structure, Information Gathering, Information Giving) — plus specific missed opportunities and better phrasing suggestions pulled from your own transcript.

It's an AI-generated practice estimate, not an official OET score, but it's available at any hour, doesn't require scheduling anyone else's time, and gives you a new, unpredictable conversation every time you practise.

Putting It Together

The most effective candidates typically combine all four: self-recording early on to build basic fluency and structure, shadowing to sharpen pronunciation and rhythm, occasional live practice with a peer or tutor for the human unpredictability, and frequent AI role-play sessions in between — since those are the ones you can fit in daily without coordinating anyone else's schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really prepare for OET Speaking without a tutor?

Yes, though it takes more deliberate effort than the other sub-tests. Combining self-recording, shadowing, occasional peer practice, and AI-powered role plays covers most of what a tutor would otherwise provide.

Is talking to myself in the mirror useful preparation?

It helps with basic delivery and confidence, but it can't tell you whether your questions actually gather the information a real patient would reveal — that requires a conversation partner, human or AI, who responds unpredictably.

What is the AI Speaking Practice tool and how is it different from a chatbot?

It is a voice-only, role-play-specific simulation: the AI stays strictly in character as the patient or relative, never coaches you, never corrects your grammar mid-conversation, and never reveals the assessment criteria — the same way a real OET interlocutor and role player behave.

Does the AI Speaking Practice give an official OET score?

No. It provides an AI-generated practice assessment for educational purposes only, scored against the same linguistic and clinical communication categories used in the real exam, but it is explicitly not an official OET result.

How long is each AI Speaking Practice role play?

Each role play runs up to five minutes, matching a single OET Speaking role play, with a short preparation period beforehand just like the real test.

Which professions are supported in the AI Speaking Practice tool?

Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy scenarios are available now, with more professions planned.
